As the largest torrent tracker site in the world, TorrentFreak claimed that it will be a landmark trial for the future of BitTorrent trackers. In January 2015, the Swedish appeals court upheld a ruling that The Pirate Bay must remain blocked in Denmark. In February 2018 both Sweden and Denmark were ordered to pay compensation to the eight Hollywood companies involved as well as to pay legal costs. The Pirate Bay is one of several websites which were blocked in China. According to an official statement, they are banned "for providing unauthorized links to copyrighted information." According to the ruling they were banned because of the "systematic copyright infringement" involved in their operation.
